When is a pet considered a senior?

Generally, a pet is considered a senior at seven years of age.  Smaller breeds of dogs live longer than larger breeds, and cats live longer than dogs.  Beyond that, the life span will vary with each individual.  Your veterinarian is your best source for more information to determine when your pet reaches the golden years.

Senior Health Exams

Disease sets in before symptoms are ever seen.  Since animals age more rapidly than humans do,  dramatic changes can occur in as little as 3-6 months.  Scheduling regular preventative veterinary examinations is one of the most important steps pet owners can take to keep their pets in shape and avoid adverse health conditions.   We recommend that senior pets visit the veterinarian every six months for a complete exam.  Keep in mind that every year for your pet is equivalent to 5–7 human years.  In order stay current with your senior pet’s health care, twice-a-year exams are a must!

Laboratory Testing

Our veterinarians depend on laboratory results to help them understand the status of your pet’s health.  Subtle changes in test results may give an indication of problems.  Senior wellness tests begin for pets at middle age to establish baseline values and to insure that there are no clinically silent health abnormalities.  Testing is recommended at least once a year for pets in middle age and every six months for senior pets.
